From a theoretical point of view , you make sense but from a practical and realistic point of view your theory is but a dream that will not be realized.
If I make sense, then eventually my dream will be realized. That is the power of common sense. There is no getting away from it. It covers you coming and going. You either yield to it, or it will take you down.
The peace we've had with Egypt has been a cold peace at best. For his own purposes, Mubarak allowed a great deal of anit-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiments to foment. That is in a real peace.
But Gabe, as far as I'm concerned, what is happening on the streets, even as we speak, is a game changer. What was is not what is, and what will be, will be something else altogether.
There is a real opportunity to make something happen. It will require the efforts of all who stand to benefit. Israel can be one of the beneficiaries, but so far, she has not taken the initiative. She is sitting on the sidelines, hopeing for things to work out. They won't. If we sit back and wait for things to happen, they will, and they will happen to us, in a negative and destructive way.
If, however, we take the initiative, we can orchestrate a new strategic reality in the Middle East, and a revitalization of the entire region, with good paying jobs, with moderate candidates, and with requisite institutions which will support freedom and democracy.
It will take a lot of imagination, and even more hard work. And as you suggest, there are no guarantees. But I firmly believe that Israel has the capactiy to undertake such a transformation, and I would go further in saying that only Israel is in a position to make something happen along these lines.
To my mind, Israel is not the problem in the Middle East. She is the solution for the Middle East, but only if she chooses to assume that role.
I enjoy these talks we've had, and I hope that you continue to challenge me at every turn. It helps me get the word out, and believe me when I tell you that I will do what I can to do just that.
