Selling a Vision of Hope: One Couple?s Attempt to Change the World
Monday, April 30 2007

Baltimore, Maryland

Nissim and Mira DahanMany people around the world sense that as a species, we may well be inching our way toward a bad place. With the looming crisis between the Western world and the Muslim world, and with so many other crises brewing, like global warming and nuclear proliferation to name a few, things aren?t looking quite as rosy as they should. What if anything can we do about it?

Mira and Nick Dahan, a middle-aged couple living in Baltimore, Maryland, have come up with a novel approach which they call Selling a Vision of Hope. The idea is that together, we may be able to shift the world in a slightly different direction, one which points to the possibility of peace.

We can use An Ideology of Common Sense, along with some well placed Investment Dollars, to sell a Vision of Hope - A Vision of Peace, Prosperity, and Freedom - on the Arab street, in the Muslim world, and in the world as a whole. Albert Einstein came up with E=mc2. Thankfully, the formula for world peace is a lot simpler: Ideology plus Investment equals Hope, and with hope, all things are possible, even the impossible dream of peace.

You may well ask: How do we know that the formula - Ideology plus Investment equals Hope, will actually work? Well, for one thing, it seems to be working quite well for the ideological extremists in the Middle East. According to Mira and Nick, the extremists are quite adept at using An Extremist Ideology of Jihad, along with Charitable Investment in Social Services, to sell a Vision of Hope for Islamic resurgence and ultimate triumph.

And as we all know, the extremists rely on Terror to underscore their ?sales pitch.? To defeat the enemy, the West must first come to know the enemy. What if the West could defeat the extremists by doing what they do, only better; by co-opting their strategy; by beating them at their own game, and thereby marginalizing them in the eyes of their own people?

Mira and Nick feel that we can learn from the enemy - the ideological extremists - and use what we learn to defeat them. If the extremists rely on the divisive Ideology of Extremism to get their message out; we will counter with the inclusive Ideology of Common Sense, one that fosters unity by weaving people together with a common thread - the thread of universal truths and values. If the extremists win hearts and minds with charitable giving; we will inspire the man on the street by creating an International Fund for Economic Development in the Middle East under the banner: ?We stand ready to invest in you if you are ready to invest in yourselves.?

If the extremists inspire hope by selling people on the idea of Islamic conquest; we will use an Ideology of Common Sense along with Economic Incentives to sell people on a Vision of Hope - a Vision of Peace, Prosperity, and Freedom. The realistic hope for a better life will trump the false hope for extremist triumph. And if the extremists use Terror to make their point, we will launch a military campaign to fight back, but we will position the fight within a Vision of Hope, one that points to the possibility of peace.

A Vision of Hope will raise the fight on the ground to a higher moral plain and will give the fight a moral clarity of purpose. Some will naturally ask, ?If we already have to fight in the Middle East, why should we also have to invest in the Middle East?? Mira and Nick say that the answer is simple. It is precisely because we have to fight, that we also have to invest. Investing in the Middle East will give our good intentions a good measure of credibility and will embolden us to sustain the fight until the fight is won.

As Americans, we naturally yearn for peace. It is who we are as a people. But ask yourselves this: Where is peace to be found? Mira and Nick suggest that in the final analysis, peace will come from the heart, and the mind, of the man on the street. We can win his mind by speaking to him with common sense, and with a sense of personal dignity. We can win his heart by giving him a place at the table - a stake in his future.

And we can win the peace by selling him on a Vision of Hope - A Vision of Peace, Prosperity, and Freedom. Give the man on the street a sense of hope, and you will have turned the corner on world peace. Nothing less will suffice and nothing more is needed. The extremists will not be able to capture the public?s imagination, once people begin to imagine a better life for themselves.

Who are Mira and Nick Dahan to advocate on behalf of such lofty goals, and such far reaching policies? Actually, they see themselves as just an ordinary couple who dare to use their common sense to bring order to the tangled web that is the Middle East. Nick is a lawyer who, as part of a family business, has sold and built some 1200 custom homes in the Baltimore metropolitan area over the past 30 years. Mira, a mother and homemaker, has also worked as the building company?s service manager, a job you wouldn?t wish on your worst enemy.

Nick has recently written a book about their idea entitled Selling a Vision of Hope: A Refreshing Alternative to Armageddon, which is being published and will be available for sale in the summer of 2007.
